The native Klaviyo [Shopify](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/admin-rest/usage/rate-limits) integration is **free to install** and syncs orders, customers, products, checkouts and marketing consent without extra tooling.

It **skips custom app data** and anything outside Shopify's standard objects, which is the gap teams usually fill with a workflow tool such as [Activepieces](https://www.activepieces.com) or their own scripts. This matches Klaviyo's and Shopify's documentation as of 14 October 2026.

![Odd-shaped parcels left beside a gate for standard crates](https://ap-marketing-media.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/4be2027b-3da8-494f-ad91-7e23b3ade1a0/klaviyo-shopify-integration-setup-and-pricing-20-9731b713.webp)

The Klaviyo Shopify integration is the native connection that links a Shopify store to a Klaviyo account so that orders, customers, products, checkouts and marketing consent sync automatically and can drive email and SMS flows.

Install Klaviyo from the Shopify App Store, or from the Integrations tab inside Klaviyo, and approve the permissions it requests. Historical data then backfills and new activity flows in. For standard store events, there's no reason to build anything else first.

## Review what Klaviyo Shopify syncs and skips

### What data syncs automatically

The table shows which Shopify data reaches Klaviyo on its own, as an event or a profile property, and how fast. Where it says "No", you would need a second tool.

| Data | Synced natively | How | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orders | Yes | Events (placed, fulfilled, cancelled, refunded) | Near real time |
| Customers | Yes | Profile properties | Near real time, plus initial backfill |
| Products | Yes | Catalog items, plus the Ordered Product event | Periodic catalog sync |
| Checkouts | Yes | Started Checkout event | Near real time |
| Marketing consent | Yes | Consent status on the profile | Updated on change |
| Metafields | Partial | Profile property, only where you set up the mapping | Depends on the mapping |
| Custom app data | No | Not available | None |

It doesn't read data held by third-party Shopify apps, and it can't fire a flow from a trigger Shopify doesn't emit. It also can't push Klaviyo data into a helpdesk, spreadsheet or CRM.

[Activepieces](https://www.activepieces.com) takes on those jobs through its 740 integrations, and you only need it then.

### Requirements before you start (plans, permissions, store access)

You need a Klaviyo account and a Shopify user who can install apps, normally the store owner or a staff account with that permission. Any Shopify plan works.

The **install costs nothing, but Klaviyo bills** for email by profile count, so the real cost is your list size.

How steep that curve gets is clear from [Everboost's pricing breakdown](https://everboost.co.uk/insights/how-much-does-klaviyo-cost/):

| Profiles | Email plan per month | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | $0 | A new store can test the integration for free. |
| 1,000 | $30 | The first point where the bill becomes a line item, so anything below this scale avoids the cost. |
| 5,000 | $100 | More than three times the 1,000-profile price for five times the list, which means the per-profile cost falls. |
| 10,000 | $150 | |
| 50,000 | $720 | A large list costs far more than the free install suggests. |

![What Klaviyo's email plans cost by list size](https://ap-marketing-media.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/2492f728-10a3-4c9d-a836-bf8f84d63aa0/klaviyo-shopify-integration-setup-and-pricing-20-f5db78b7.svg "Source: Everboost")

Budget for the profile tier you expect to reach, not the one you start on.

## Connect Klaviyo to Shopify in seven numbered steps

Keep both admin screens open. Button names below match Klaviyo's help center as of 14 October 2026, and Shopify can rename them without notice.

### Install Klaviyo's Shopify app and approve access

Step 1: In Shopify admin, open the Shopify App Store and install Klaviyo's app, or start from Integrations in Klaviyo and add the Shopify integration. Either route lands on the same connection.

Step 2: On Shopify's permissions screen, read the list before you click install. These scopes are what let Klaviyo read customers, orders and products, so a missing scope shows up later as a missing event.

Step 3: Sign in to Klaviyo and choose the account to connect. If you manage several brands, check the account name twice. Connecting to the wrong one mixes two stores' customers in one profile set, and untangling that's slow.

### Steps 4–5: Pick the list and set consent collection

Step 4: In the integration settings, select the list that new Shopify customers will join. Use a dedicated list for store signups rather than your general newsletter list, so you can see where subscribers came from.

Step 5: Set how consent is collected at checkout. This decides whether checkout subscribes a buyer automatically, offers a checkbox, or only syncs the buyer as a profile without marketing permission. Choose the option your legal basis supports.

**If you import buyers as subscribers without their consent, that is a compliance problem, and the syncing mechanism won't catch it.**

### Steps 6–7: Enable onsite tracking and verify with a test order

Step 6: In Shopify, open the theme editor and switch on Klaviyo's onsite tracking in the app embeds panel. Without it, order events still sync, but browsing events such as viewed product and started checkout never arrive. Abandoned-cart flows depend on those events.

![Theme editor app embeds panel with Klaviyo onsite tracking toggle switched off](https://ap-marketing-media.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/d648347a-160d-4d25-afa5-fca4200fa9d3/klaviyo-shopify-integration-setup-and-pricing-20-0859159e.webp)

Step 7: Place a test order with an email address you control, then look for that profile and its order event in Klaviyo. If the profile exists but the order event doesn't, return to step 2 and check the permissions.

## Check Klaviyo Shopify settings after going live

A passing first test doesn't prove the connection will keep working. Three settings decide that: the historical sync, the consent options, and the onsite tracking embed. Each one fails quietly, so check them before building flows on top.

### Historical sync and how long it takes

Once you connect, Klaviyo pulls in existing customers, orders and products in the background. Klaviyo doesn't promise a fixed time, and a large catalogue or long order history means profiles and past orders appear in stages.

![A mostly empty glass beside a slowly filling large tank](https://ap-marketing-media.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/dd0beb98-8797-44e4-8193-9e2d383b4bb2/klaviyo-shopify-integration-setup-and-pricing-20-ae908403.webp)

Don't judge the connection by an empty segment on day one. Wait until the sync status shows it finished, then build segments or flows that depend on purchase history. Otherwise a "has not purchased" filter will wrongly include customers whose orders haven't arrived yet.

### Consent and the subscriber list

Klaviyo reads the consent that Shopify records.

Shopify's checkout settings control whether shoppers see an email or SMS opt-in box at checkout, and Klaviyo's Shopify settings control whether that consent syncs and which list new subscribers join.

If the checkout box is off, new buyers arrive as profiles with no marketing consent, and a campaign sent to your list will skip them. If the sync option is off, the consent Shopify holds never reaches Klaviyo.

Check both sides, then place a test order with the box ticked and confirm the profile lands on the right list.

### Enable Klaviyo Shopify onsite tracking with app embed

One kind of data behaves differently: browsing behavior. Order events come through the Shopify connection itself, but Viewed Product, Active on Site and Added to Cart depend on Klaviyo's onsite script, which you switch on as an app embed in the Shopify theme editor.

![Audit Logs](https://ap-marketing-media.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/uploads/386757c3-834a-4fa2-b29d-81caff3e41c7/automate-ticket-handoffs-a-2026-guide-for-saas-t-26e23664.webp)

If the toggle is off, abandoned-cart and browse-abandonment flows have no trigger, even though order-based flows work fine. The toggle belongs to the theme, so publishing a new theme or switching themes can leave it off.

Once a workflow tool is writing into your Klaviyo account, the same question applies to it: who changed what, and when. Activepieces answers that with audit logs, and with custom RBAC, SSO and SCIM in the same product, whether you self-host it or use cloud.

MoneyGram, Moneypenny, Alan and FundingSocieties run it in production.

## Fix Klaviyo Shopify sync errors

Rule out five setup faults before deciding the native connector falls short, because most sync failures trace to them and you can fix each inside the connector. The table maps what you see to what usually causes it.

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Orders missing | Integration disconnected or app permissions not approved | Check the integration shows as active in Klaviyo, then reapprove access in Shopify |
| No Active on Site or Viewed Product events | Klaviyo's onsite tracking not enabled on the theme, or blocked in the browser | Turn on the Klaviyo app embed in the Shopify theme editor and test in a browser without ad blockers |
| Wrong or duplicate store | Connected to the wrong Shopify store, or connected more than once | Remove the extra connection and reconnect the correct store |
| Permission or plan error | Connecting user lacks owner-level access in Shopify or Klaviyo, or a feature sits outside the current plan | Connect as an account owner, or check the plan before building on the feature |
| Consent mismatch | Shopify and Klaviyo store marketing consent separately | Align the consent settings and compare the profile's status in both systems |

### Orders or events not showing in Klaviyo

When orders are missing, look at the connection itself. Open the Klaviyo integration page, confirm the store is listed as active, and confirm the Shopify app permissions were approved when it was installed.

A connection set up by someone without sufficient rights **can look finished while syncing nothing**.

If Active on Site and Viewed Product events are missing, the fault is a different one: those come from the browser, not from Shopify's order data. Test in a clean browser session before you touch anything else.

### Wrong store, duplicate connections and reconnecting

If data lands in the wrong account or appears twice, list every Shopify connection in Klaviyo and compare each one against the store you intend to use. Keep one.

To reconnect, disconnect the integration from Klaviyo's integrations page, then add it again from the same page while signed in to the correct Shopify store. Do it as an owner, so a permission error doesn't recreate the original fault.

### Consent and subscriber status that doesn't match Shopify

When a profile is subscribed in one system and not the other, it is rarely a bug. Shopify records consent at checkout and in its own customer records; Klaviyo records it through lists and its own forms.

Check where the person actually opted in before editing either side.

Contact support once the connection is active, permissions are approved, the embed is on and the store is correct, and data is still missing. Send the store URL, an example order or profile, and what you checked.

## Fill Klaviyo gaps with Activepieces workflows

If the connector already syncs the data your flow needs, stop there; Activepieces earns its place only when the **trigger or the data sits outside** what the connector sends.

### Jobs the native integration won't do

When a product metafield changes, say a restock date or a loyalty tier stored on the customer record, that is not a standard event, so no Klaviyo flow can start from it. That's a gap in the data, not a setup fault.

A workflow tool closes it by watching Shopify itself and writing the result into Klaviyo as a custom event.

### One workflow: Shopify trigger to Klaviyo custom event

1. Trigger: the [Shopify piece](https://www.activepieces.com/pieces/shopify) fires when the record that holds the metafield is updated.
2. Fetch the metafield value, then compare it with the last value you stored. A branch step stops the run when nothing changed, which prevents duplicate events on unrelated edits.
3. Action: send the event to Klaviyo's Events API through the HTTP integration, or the [Klaviyo piece](https://www.activepieces.com/pieces/klaviyo) where it exposes the action you need. Check that before you build.

Map the customer email as the profile identifier, name the metric after the change, and put the old and new values in the event properties. Those properties are what your Klaviyo flow will filter on.

Set retries on the final step and reuse a unique ID per change, so a retried run doesn't log the same change twice.

You can [start this flow free on Activepieces Cloud](https://cloud.activepieces.com/sign-up).

### Compare Klaviyo Shopify sync options by setup effort

The native connector is easiest to set up, but it's the only option here that can't start from a metafield change.

| | Setup effort | Shopify metafield and custom event coverage | Entry price (vendor pricing pages, 2026-10-14) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Klaviyo connector | Lowest: install and authorize | Standard Shopify data only; no metafield-triggered custom events | No separate charge beyond your Klaviyo and Shopify plans |
| Zapier | Low for listed triggers | Limited to the triggers its Shopify app lists; webhooks and API requests cover the rest | Free plan; paid tiers on its pricing page |
| n8n | Moderate: you build each node | Any endpoint through the HTTP Request node | Free self-hosted community edition; paid cloud plans |
| Activepieces | Moderate: you build each step | Any endpoint through the HTTP piece | Free self-hosted open-source edition; cloud sign-up is free |

Pick by governance, not catalogue size. Whichever tool you choose, check that role-based access, single sign-on, audit logs and git sync come with it, so the workflow that writes to your Klaviyo account is reviewable.

## Frequently asked questions

These answers follow Klaviyo's and Shopify's own documentation, and the notes mark where to confirm current terms before you act.

### Is the Klaviyo Shopify integration free?

It costs nothing to install, but Klaviyo bills for the profiles it holds, so what you pay depends on how many customers sync in.

Klaviyo's free plan caps profiles and sends, so check your store's customer count against the current limit before the first sync. A large historical import can push you into a paid tier on day one.

How long that import takes also varies with store size, so don't schedule a launch around it.

### Can I connect one Klaviyo account to multiple Shopify stores?

Yes, one Klaviyo account can take several Shopify stores, each added as its own integration. Klaviyo's documentation covers this setup.

Because each store sends its own orders, checkouts and product events, a flow's trigger and filters need to say which store they apply to. If you skip that, a shopper at your second store can receive the first store's abandoned-cart email.

Profiles are shared across the account, so one customer who buys from both stores becomes a single record.

### Does Klaviyo sync Shopify customers who haven't opted in to marketing?

Yes, the sync brings in customers as profiles whether or not they consented, but a profile isn't a subscriber. Marketing consent is tracked separately, and Klaviyo only sends marketing to profiles with valid consent. Transactional messages, such as order confirmations, follow different rules.

So a large profile count says little about your reachable audience, and it can inflate your billing tier. If you import consent from elsewhere, record where and when it was given, because that record is what protects you later.

### How do I disconnect Klaviyo from Shopify without losing data?

Once you disconnect, new data stops flowing, and profiles and event history already in Klaviyo generally stay in your account.

What breaks is everything that depends on live Shopify events. Flows triggered by orders, checkouts or fulfillment stop firing, and the onsite tracking snippet may remain in your theme until you remove it. Before you disconnect, take these steps:

1. Export the profile lists and segments you rely on.
2. Pause the flows that use Shopify triggers.
3. Disconnect from the integration settings.
4. Remove any leftover Klaviyo code from the theme.

Do it in that order and you lose nothing except the live feed, which is the point of disconnecting.
